TACHS Prep Tips

If you plan to send your kid to a Catholic high school in Brooklyn, Queens, and New York City, you have to help your child prepare for the TACHS exam. The Test for Admission into Catholic High Schools or TACHS is used for a secondary school in the diocese of Brooklyn and Queens and the archdiocese of New York City.

How to Prepare for the TACHS

What’s on the TACHS?

The exam is composed of 200 multiple-choice questions. There are four sections in the exam: reading, language, mathematics, and abilities.

Reading

The Reading part is good for 35 minutes. It includes vocabulary with twenty questions that have to be answered for 10 minutes. The kid’s knowledge of definitions is gauged here. Reading also includes reading comprehension questions which have thirty questions and a time limit of twenty-five minutes. This part gauges the kid’s ability to analyze text and make inferences.

Language

Language also has two parts Spelling, Capitalization, Punctuation, and Usage/Expression with 40 questions for 23 minutes which measures the kid’s knowledge of grammar and Paragraphs with 10 questions for only 7 minutes. This measures the kid’s ability to analyze the organization and clarity of paragraphs.

Mathematics

Mathematics is composed of Concepts, Data Interpretation, Problem Solving, and Estimation. Concepts, Data Interpretation, Problem Solving has 32 questions that are answerable in 33 minutes. This area focuses on operations, word problems, and how to analyze graphs and tables. Estimation on the other hand has 18 questions to be answered in 7 minutes. This is where the kids round off or approximate numbers.

Abilities

Abilities is made up of Similarities and Changes and Abstract Reasoning. Similarities and Changes is composed of 40 questions which can be answered in 25 minutes. This part is to gauge the kid’s ability to analyze sequences and patterns. The second part is Abstract Reasoning which has 10 questions to be answered in 7 minutes. Here students make inferences and predictions about different patterns.

Getting Ready for the Test

Once you register for the exam, you will be provided a handbook which contains guidelines that will help you with the test. This includes what to bring, what you may leave at home, and how to prepare for the exam. TACHS practice tests are also included in the handbook to help you achieve high TACHS Scores. A lot of students take part in a kind of prep test weeks before the exam. There are also TACHS review classes that are offered by small companies or tutors who are knowledgeable in TACHS.

Students can also find TACHS prep books. For one, portions of Catholic High School Entrance Exams for Dummies can be accessed online. It even includes a cheat sheet that includes hints about details to memorize, how to guess, and other useful tips.

It is also important to practice some academic skills that are related to the exam’s content which can help the student to be more prepared. Students are also advised to hone their critical thinking by reading challenging books and articles. Practicing the kid’s time management skills is also a great help. This can be done by answering sample sections from published TACHS materials for him or her to answer as many questions as possible at a limited time.

TACHS student takers may also use TACHS tutoring services which can be an In-Person TACHS Tutoring or an Online TACHS Tutoring. The in-person tutorial means the tutor has to meet the student in the flesh for them to study together.

There are several benefits to an online tutorial. When you say online tutorial, it means a self-study activity that is designed to produce a specific outcome. An online tutorial can be recorded or interactive.

This type of tutorial makes use of video screencast or video recordings which is usually done by an expert on the subject presenting information and ideas and doing a demonstration. It can be done with an audio narration used over Powerpoint slides.

There’s also the interactive online tutorial which often includes a structured collection of web pages that are highly navigable. Each of the webpages may contain text, video, images, audio, self-test questions, and other interactive activities. It may also involve the use of screencasts.

Technological innovations made it possible for your kid to prepare for the TACHS in the comfort of one’s home yet aided by a genuine curriculum teacher. Here are the best reasons to get your kid to undergo online tutorial:

Reasons for an Online Tutorial

Convenience and flexible hours

One of the best benefits of an online tutorial is that you don’t have to drive to be in a physical classroom setup. You can study with your professional tutor online at your most convenient time. You have time to do your chores and be with family while at the same time reducing your carbon footprints. You are even free to have some downtime.

More familiar medium to kids

Gen Z and the next generation called Coronials are tech-savvy and devices and online technology are second nature to them. They are often Skyping, Zooming, and Facetiming; hence the idea of learning through a video is not new to them. There are also many platforms online that can facilitate online learning such as interactive whiteboards and share screens.

Variety of teachers

The heart of the privilege is access to a variety of teachers. When you are searching for a tutor, you have a vast selection to choose from. From these multiple options, you may opt to have more than one tutor and perhaps a different tutor for every subject. This gives you the option to hire a tutor who specializes in the area you want to focus on.

Availability

There’s often no problem in finding a tutor online since the tutor does not have to face issues on travel time, geography, time zones, commuting, etc. It also makes it easier for any tutor to match the kid’s free time, study habits, and problem area.

TACHS Online Class is not that hard to come by. All you need is to do a bit of research.
